COVID 19 (Long Hauler’s Syndrome)

COVID-19 (LONG HAULER’S SYNDROME)

Although the corona virus disease otherwise known as COVID-19 continues to decline overall in the United States, there are those who even after what would be deemed initial recovery, are still suffering with symptoms long after contracting the disease. These individuals are sometimes referred to as having PASC(Post-Acute-Sequelae of Sars-CoV), long COVID, post-COVID syndrome, and even Long Haulers Syndrome, whatever the term  used, the end result is the same, these people still do not feel well.

Common symptoms include but are not limited to: brain fog(memory and concentration problems), sleep problems, fatigue, joint and/or muscle pain, tinnitus(ringing in the ears),  headaches, feeling short of breath, cough, dizziness upon standing, fevers, gastrointestinal issues, chest pain/fast or pounding heartbeat, loss of sense of smell or taste, mood swings or anxiety issues. These symptoms seem to worsen after physical or mental exertion. Those who already had underlying conditions such as diabetes, autoimmune diseases, thyroid problems, or obesity before contracting COVID-19 seem to be especially impacted.

While Functional Medicine does not specifically treat COVID-19, it does assess multisystem functions in the body. A Functional M edicine approach would include extensive testing of the different systems such as a thorough evaluation of gut health, immune health, adrenal health, nutritional status, inflammatory status, and specific testing for any underlying stealth pathogens such as parasitic, bacterial, or viral infections. Once these results are in, Dr. Williams will then design a customized individualized plan to correct the imbalances/pathogens discovered using targeted nutraceuticals, probiotics, and dietary changes. For those with long haulers syndrome it is important to remember that multiple systems can be involved in why you are having the symptoms you are having and all of the imbalances found need to be addressed systematically, carefully rebuilding your health. This comprehensive approach will take time and dedication on the part of everyone involved, Doctor, staff, and patient. Please know you will not walk this journey alone, we are here to support you every step of the way.
