HYPOTHYROIDISM

HYPOTHYROIDISM

Hypothyroidism is the most common of the thyroid diseases and occurs when the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone or is unable to effectively convert thyroid hormone. This becomes a problem because the thyroid gland is the primary regulator of temperature, growth, reproductive health, cholesterol, blood sugar, and even weight. Common causes for the thyroid becoming underactive can include but are not limited to: specific nutrient deficiencies that are essential to thyroid function, damage to the thyroid through an injury or even sometimes a surgical intervention, toxins, blood sugar imbalances, hormonal imbalances, food intolerances(especially gluten/gliadin), gut dysbiosis, inflammation, leaky gut, SIBO/SIFO, and adrenal fatigue.

Functional Medicine in addition to running a complete thyroid panel, would also test for the above conditions to arrive at the root cause(s) of an underactive thyroid. Then based upon your test results, Dr. Williams would design a comprehensive nutraceutical plan to address the imbalances/deficiencies, plus diet and lifestyle recommendations.
