POSTMENOPAUSAL SYMPTOMS
Menopause occurs when a women has not had a period for 12 consecutive months. It occurs on average at the age of 51, but can happen sooner or later for some women. It is always accompanied by hormonal changes. Due to these changes many women begin to experience symptoms such as: hot flashes, insomnia, mood swings, fatigue, vaginal dryness/sex drive changes, increased frequency of urination, muscle and joint pain, headaches/migraines, bone loss, brain fog/difficulty concentrating, weight gain(especially around the abdomen), facial hair growth, and dry skin and/or hair. Functional Medicine approaches menopause by first administering comprehensive testing to evaluate not only hormones, but liver function, vitamin and mineral levels, and multiple other contributing factors. An emphasis on diet and lifestyle modifications such as exercise and stress reduction will also be key to making the transition to and through menopause a less troublesome experience. Dr. Williams will evaluate all of these factors and design an individualized plan to help the patient navigate menopause.
