PREMENSTRUAL SYNDROME SYMPTOMS

PREMENSTRUAL SYNDROME SYMPTOMS

Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) is a combination of symptoms that many women experience about a week or two before they start their period each month. These symptoms can be both physical and behavioral. Common PMS symptoms include: mood swings, food cravings, irritability, tender breasts, fatigue, headaches/migraines, insomnia, joint/muscle pain, abdominal bloating, fluid retention, poor concentration, and depression.

The symptoms of PMS are generally attributed to fluctuations in hormone levels. There are key vitamins and minerals that if low can contribute to the exacerbation of PMS. The Functional Medicine approach to treating PMS will be multi-faceted. Comprehensive lab testing will be performed that will include a complete hormone panel, a liver profile(to check how your body is clearing toxins), and a check of vitamin and mineral levels. In addition, other areas will be evaluated such as lifestyle because stress can exacerbate symptoms, the patient’s diet, and even exogenous hormone exposure such as those found in cosmetics and shampoos. Once Dr. Williams has all of your test results, an individualized plan will be devised to address the underlying causes of your PMS.
