Post Surgical Adhesions

Surgery is often necessary to correct health problems but unfortunately the surgery itself can create other unexpected issues such as post surgical adhesions. Adhesions form as a result of inflammation caused by muscles and fascia (a fibrous tissue that surrounds muscles and organs) being cut and pulled upon during surgery. Adhesions are a normal part of the healing process, but in some cases, the adhesions do not go away and can cause more inflammation and pain. If you have such an adhesion, you may feel a sharp pain with certain motions or a restriction in movement because the tissues can’t stretch the way that they should.

Some patients my require additional surgeries to “clean up” these adhesions but this can also create more adhesions resulting in a vicious cycle. Over his many years in practice, Dr. Williams has developed protocols to free up adhesions using myofascial release techniques (several that he developed), allowing the tissues to move more normally. This results in better oxygen and blood flow to the area where the adhesions have occurred, which in turn, improves function and decreases pain allowing the tissues, (with proper rehabilitation) to heal. If you believe you may be experiencing post surgical adhesions, call Dr. Williams for an evaluation and treatment options.
